whatisworship

Worship is a weird word. It is vague and can have many meanings. It can be used of anything that we value and strive for (I worship that girl) and it can also be used to reference simple actions (I worship at church). Our word derives from the Anglo-Saxon word “worth-ship,” which simply meant to give worth to something. In pursuing a girl, a boy certainly sees worth in her, and in worshipping at church Christians certainly aim to attribute worth to God. In the latter situation, we would also call this “praise” or “exaltation.” In the Hebrew Scriptures or Old Testament, the concept of worship was not so vague – it carried the added connotation of obedience, submission or prostration, and certainly praise and exaltation specifically focused on God.

At Antioch, one of the ways we seek to attribute worth to God on Sunday mornings is through music and song. We have no desire for this time of music and praise to be man-centered or simply entertaining – rather it is our heart’s desire that through music we may be able to submit, commit to obedience, and celebrate a God who is wonderful and worthy of praise.

For us, “worship” is much more akin to prayer than anything else… it is a time when we communicate with God and are able to say “yes” to all that He asks of us.
